PEARL Project Participants Finalist for National Award

Two participants from the UNT PEARL project were selected as finalist for Library Journal’s Best Small Library in America 2013 Finalists.

These libraries are Bell/Whittington Public Library, Portland, TX (RoseAleta Laurell, Director), and Alpine Public Library, TX (Paige Delaney, Director). RoseAleta Laurell is currently pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Study in rural librarianship from the Department of Library and Information Sciences, University of North Texas. She is one of five scholarship awardees from the PEARL Project (Promoting & Enhancing the Advancement of Rural Libraries). Paige Delany participated in the PEARL project and completed her community outreach plan in May, 2012. Both libraries will receive a $10,000 cash award and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the 2014 PLA meeting and award celebration.

The UNT PEARL project received $1,599,222 in funding from the Robert and Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust in 2010.  The goal of the project is to enhance the role of public libraries in targeted rural communities in Texas.
